TIMELINE OF EVENTS

1983

Formation of the Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) Chinese Orchestra

1984

Led by Miss Kang Hwee Ling, a group of students sought to form a cultural dance group and enliven the cultural scene in NTI. This cultural dance group would be later known as the Social and Ballroom Dance Academy (now known as NTU CAC DanceSport Academy)

1985

  • Formation of the Nanyang Technological Institute Band
  • Formation of the NTI Taekwon-Do Academy (now known as NTU CAC Traditional Taekwon-Do Club)
  • Formation of the NTI Guitar Ensemble

1986

Formation of the NTI Harmonica Band

1988

The idea of the formation of the Cultural Activities Club (CAC) as a non-academic constituent club was first mooted. The proposed CAC would be the umbrella student body for performing arts and cultural activities within the Institute.

1989

Formation of the NTI Choir

1990

The NTI Band was renamed as the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Symphonic Band, in line with the name change that accompanied the merger between NTI and the National Institute of Education (NIE).

1991

  • CAC was officially inaugurated as a non-academic constituent club by the Student Affairs Office. The Club is the official representative student body for all sub-clubs related to performing arts and cultural activities in financial, administrative and operational matters, with all existing sub-clubs related to the two areas subsumed under it with its inauguration.
  • Formation of the NTU CAC Lion Dance and Chinese Pugilistic Club

1994

  • Formation of the NTU CAC String Ensemble
  • Formation of the NTU CAC Chinese Dance Club

1998

The NTU Dragon Dance Troupe was merged with the Lion Dance and Chinese Pugilistic Club and rebranded as the NTU CAC Pugilistic Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe

1999

Formation of NTU CAC Kinetics, a dance club that promotes a type of African-American swing dancing known as Lindy Hop

2001

  • Formation of the NTU CAC Chinese Drums Club
  • Formation of the NTU CAC Contemporary Dance Club

2002

  • Formation of the NTU CAC Piano Ensemble
  • NTU CAC Impresario, a nation-wide talent search competition started in 1992, joined CAC as one of the Club’s special projects.

2003

The Pugilistic section of the Pugilistic Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe became an independent club under CAC and was rebranded as NTU CAC Wushu.

2004

  • CAC’s sub-clubs were rebranded as Member Clubs to create a greater sense of belonging and association with CAC.
  • Ventures to expand the reach of CAC beyond the University begun with the promotion of our Member Clubs performances to the public and external organisations, as well as the establishment of ArtJam, a student-run magazine focused on promoting the Arts, under the CAC Publications Committee.
  • NTU CAC ARTStravaganza, a cultural festival with the aim of promoting the performing arts and cultural activities in NTU, was started as one of the Club’s special projects. It was later renamed as the Nanyang Arts Festival.
  • NTU CAC Arts From The Heart, an annual charity project, was created as one of the Club’s special projects.

2005

Formation of the NTU CAC Jazz and Blues]

2006

  • Formation of NTU CAC Nocturnal Rhythmz Crew, a dance club specialising in breakdance
  • Formation of NTU CAC Salsa En Sync
  • Formation of the NTU CAC Emcee Club

2007

NTU CAC Joint Dance Concert, NTU’s one and only joint stage performance by the major dance clubs of NTU, was created as one of the Club’s special projects.

2008

  • NTU CAC DrumZout, nationwide percussion competition, was created as one of the Club’s special projects.
  • Soul Funky was started as a sub-section under the Nocturnal Rhythmz Crew to spread the love of locking and popping dance genres within NTU.

2011

  • DrumZout held its final curtain call, due to falling participation rates in the nationwide percussion competition over the past few years.
  • The Contemporary Dance Club was rebranded as NTU CAC Contemp{minated}.
  • NTU CAC Soul Funky, previously a sub-section under the Nocturnal Rhythmz Crew, was established as CAC’s 22nd Member Club.

2012

The Nocturnal Rhythmz Crew was rebranded as NTU CAC Breakers.

2016

  • A ukulele section was subsumed under the Guitar Ensemble as a platform for ukulele enthusiasts to share and advance the increasingly popular instrument among the student population.
  • The CAC Freshmen Orientation Camp was rebranded as the CAC Freshmen Orientation Programme as a result of changes made throughout the University.
  • Kinetics was rebranded as NTU CAC Lindy Hop.
  • Launch of Artjam Online, an interactive Artjam webpage, to broaden the reach of the magazine to the NTU community and the public.

2017

  • Impresario was rebranded as NTU CAC CenterStage, which focuses on talent search beyond the areas of vocals, dance and original composition within the NTU community.
  • The Freshmen Orientation Programme was rebranded once again as the CAC Transition and Orientation Programme in line with changes made throughout the University.
  • Structural changes were made to CAC’s Support Committees. These changes included the rebranding of the Social and Welfare Committee to Social Committee, the closing of the Public Relations Committee, and the inclusion of photography services and sponsorship support by the Media and IT Committee and Business Committee respectively.
