About
Founded in August 2008, NTU Soul Funky first started as a sub-club under the NTU Breakers, and subsequently achieved club independence in 2011.
Soul Funky aims to spread the love of street dance and funk culture within NTU and contribute to the local dance scene. The club focuses on two styles of dance – locking and popping. These iconic dance styles that emerged during the 1960s and 70s respectively are regarded as part of the original funk style.
Locking is based on a concept of freezing from a fast movement and “locking” in a certain position, holding that position for a short while and then continuing in the same speed as before.
Popping is based on the technique of quickly contracting and relaxing muscles to cause a jerk in the dancer’s body, referred to as a pop or a hit.
Apart from weekly trainings with established instructors, Soul Funky hosts numerous events for members to showcase their passion for dance. Dance battles, workshops and freestyle opportunities are created to help members grow in their dance journey.
As a warm and close-knit family, Soul Funky welcomes anyone regardless of their background and experience to share the love for music and dance with us.
